palm trees and beach near a Florida street

Ahhh Florida…the state where towering palm trees and beautiful white sandy beaches meet totally bizarre news stories and ridiculous laws. One quick look at the wildly popular Twitter account, ‘Florida Man’, will give you a glimpse at just how truly strange Florida news can be. And Florida laws are no exception to the rule. Florida has some outdated and just plain odd laws on the books. Here are a few of our favorites…
Finally just recently repealed in 2015, for over 100 years, Florida had a law on the books that made cohabitation illegal. So for all of you unmarried Florida couples living under the same roof prior to 2015, you were technically breaking the ‘living-in-sin’ law, punishable by 60 days in jail or a fine of $500 (which was no small drop in the bucket in 1868 when the law was passed).
As tempting as it may be, it is illegal to sell your children in Florida.
In Daytona Beach, it is illegal to molest trash cans.
Dwarf-Tossing is illegal in commercial establishments where alcohol is sold. It’s a little disturbing to think for one reason or another that had to be written out and recorded into law.
It is illegal to skateboard without a license.  This law is ignored today, but still remains on the books in Florida.
Visiting Saratoga anytime soon? Do not sing while wearing a bathing suit in a public place.
Morals, what morals? I don’t know, but you better figure it out because in Florida it is illegal to corrupt the public morals.
In Miami, it is illegal for a man to wear a strapless gown.
And then there was that time a few years ago when Florida outlawed smartphones and computers
Florida is, if nothing else, always entertaining.
